Apply NowIt’s not unusual to feel like it’s too late to learn a new skill. This is especially true with learning a language because it can be intimidating to learn a new vocabulary and use those words properly in a conversation. At American English Institute, we offer ESL classes in Corona, CA that are designed to make it easy for everyone to learn English as a second language.
Improved mental flexibility
Learning a new language requires you to break some of the understanding you have about how to communicate. There are new ways to use nouns, verbs, adjectives, and even convey ideas. You’ll find that your mind is more flexible in how you express yourself and some of what you’re trying to say by learning a new language, as there might not be a word or phrase that translates directly across languages. You’ll find that your vocabulary in your native language will grow as you find new ways to communicate in a second language.
Increased memory function
Much of learning a new language is memorization. You’re memorizing new words and their meanings, as well as how they’re used contextually in conversation. English can be especially difficult in this way as there are many words that sound the same but have different spellings or meanings depending on how they’re used. Challenging your brain with a new vocabulary will enhance your ability to remember other things in your life and increase your memory function as you age.
Comprehension of how languages work
When you’re learning a new language as an adult, you have a better understanding of how your native language works. Conjugating verbs and nouns, as well as proper formations of descriptions, are much easier as an adult. Having a strong understanding of your native language can help with the proper formation of sentences by putting nouns, verbs, and adjectives in an order that makes sense. For instance, someone who understands that Spanish uses nouns before adjectives will have an easier time flipping this concept with English, as adjectives come before nouns.
Improved problem-solving ability
Having the ability to navigate a sentence in a new language isn’t easy. As we mentioned before, sometimes languages will use parts of speech differently than what you’re used to. Learning how to put together a sentence in a new language is like putting together a puzzle with two correct solutions. As you continue to learn how to formulate sentences in a second language, you’ll find that this ability to solve problems translates to other areas of your life.
Prevents mental deterioration
It’s not uncommon for our mental state to deteriorate as we age. Learning a language will use parts of your brain that you’re not used to, so it’s a great way to ensure that you’re continually challenging yourself. While your brain isn’t a muscle, it functions similar to your muscles in that you can improve cognitive function by going out of your comfort zone to learn new things. Your muscles grow and get stronger as you push yourself in exercising. You can get stronger in specific mental aspects by learning new skills, even as an adult.
